• In “What’s Our Problem?: A Self-Help Book for Societies”, Tim Urban provides evidence that societies thrive when institutions reward intellectual humility, open debate, evidence-based reasoning, and the willingness to revise beliefs. Societies decline when they reward tribal loyalty, outrage, certainty, and punishing dissent. He describes a “Ladder of Perception” to simplify how we think versus what we think at different times of the day using four rungs from highest to lowest (Scientist, Sports Fan, Attorney, Zealot). One key insight is that there are two dimensions to disagreement: Horizontal Axis: What you believe (conservative, progressive etc.), and Vertical Axis: How you think about those beliefs (using the Ladder of Perception). My experience is that these concepts apply to all interpersonal relationships, not just the collective societies. Relationships deteriorate and experience high conflict when individuals are operating at different rungs on the Ladder of Perception. The last human freedom to choose which rung of the Ladder of Perception we operate on will determine whether relationships and societies thrive or decline. Truth is usually complex. Certainty is often a warning sign. The real battle is not left vs. right, but higher mind versus lower mind. The goal is not to win arguments. It’s to become the kind of person who can discover when they’re wrong.
